Venous Leg Ulcer Care

Venous leg ulcers are open wounds that can develop when problems in the leg veins interfere with blood returning to the heart. Increased pressure in the veins may damage the skin over time. These wounds can be painful and may have irregular edges or discharge.

Care involves assessing the circulation, treating the wound and addressing the underlying venous problem. Depending on the specialist assessment, treatment may include appropriate compression, leg elevation, dressings, medication or a procedure to treat affected veins. Foam sclerotherapy may be considered in selected cases.

An ulcer needs a medical assessment to establish its cause and an individual care plan. Early evaluation and follow-up can support wound healing and help manage symptoms. Treatment and recovery vary between patients.
