Arterial Thrombosis
Arterial thrombosis occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery, reducing or stopping blood flow to tissues and organs. Depending on the artery affected, this can cause a heart attack, stroke or reduced blood supply to a limb.
Risk factors include atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, age and a family history of cardiovascular disease.
Treatment depends on the location and severity of the blockage. It may include medication, a procedure to restore blood flow or surgery, together with management of underlying risk factors.
Suspected arterial thrombosis requires immediate medical attention. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to limit tissue damage and serious complications.
