Diabetic Foot Care
Diabetes can damage the nerves and blood vessels in the feet. Nerve damage, known as diabetic neuropathy, may cause pain, numbness, tingling or a loss of sensation. A small cut or blister may therefore go unnoticed and can become infected or develop into an ulcer.
Reduced blood flow can make wounds harder to heal and lead to serious complications. Assessment by a specialist helps identify the circulation and nerve problems involved and plan appropriate care.

Ankle-brachial index (ABI)
This test compares blood pressure at the ankle with blood pressure in the arm. A specialist may use it to assess circulation and investigate possible peripheral arterial disease. Results need to be interpreted alongside your symptoms, examination and medical history.
Daily foot care
Managing blood glucose and caring for the feet every day are important parts of prevention. Check your feet for cuts, blisters, redness or changes to the skin and nails. Wash and dry them carefully, including between the toes. Wear suitable protective footwear and avoid walking barefoot.
Ask a trained professional for nail and callus care. Moisturize dry skin, avoiding the spaces between the toes. Avoid smoking and discuss suitable physical activity and regular foot assessments with your healthcare professional.
