Lymphangitis
Lymphangitis is inflammation of the lymphatic vessels, usually caused by a bacterial infection. The lymphatic system is part of the immune system. Symptoms may include redness, swelling, tenderness and pain along the affected vessels. The skin may feel warm, and fever or a general feeling of illness can occur.
Cuts and skin infections can allow bacteria to enter. People with a weakened immune system or a recent operation may also be at increased risk.
Treatment generally involves antibiotics and an individual care plan. Depending on the severity, hospital care and intravenous treatment may be needed. Rest, elevation and skin care may be recommended by the treating clinician.
Seek medical attention promptly if lymphangitis is suspected. An untreated infection can spread and cause serious complications.
